History

Elizabeth is named after Elizabeth College, a small Lutheran women’s college established on the present-day site of Presbyterian Hospital in 1897. Streetcars were established along East Trade Street in the area in 1891, making it Charlotte’s second oldest streetcar suburb. Elizabeth began to develop rapidly after 1902 when a trolley line was completed and annexed in 1907. Home of Independence Park, the first public park in the city, Elizabeth became one of Charlotte’s most fashionable residential areas in its early days. In 2006 Elizabeth had a population of 3,908, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, with a median age of 32.
