Elizabeth is named after Elizabeth College, a small Lutheran women’s college established on the present-day site of Presbyterian Hospital in 1897. Streetcars were established along East Trade Street in the area in 1891, making it Charlotte’s second oldest streetcar suburb. Elizabeth began to develop rapidly after 1902 when a trolley line was completed and annexed in 1907.
